Saturday 1st August 2020

There was great excitement last night in Fr Alessandro’s garden as the summer outdoor cinema season was about to start! Promptly at 8pm all 16 kids were sitting on their picnic blankets – all socially distanced, of course! – ready for a ‘night out’ watching the Walt Disney version of Tarzan. 5-year-olds as well as some teenagers were equally glued to the screen, busy munching their snacks and just enjoying the simple pleasure of being together with other children on a hot summer night, as if they were on holiday with typical Mediterranean weather.

Due to the pandemic, many families are not going on holiday this summer and in the past few months most children missed the usual social interaction with their friends and going to their youth clubs. St Columba’s R.C. church in Chesham has been very proactive in providing families and children some support in this sense, by offering the opportunity to children in the local area to get together again throughout the month of August for 90 minutes sharing something that most kids (and adults too) love: watching a movie! As health and safety is paramount, all the necessary precautions were taken by the organisers, in line with the Government Guidance to ensure a safe, enjoyable night out for all those attending.

“The enthusiastic feedback received from the children and their parents is encouraging us to continue on this path. – says Fr Alessandro Reno, parish priest at St Columba’s and Immaculate Heart of Mary’s churches – This way we can keep alive the vital connection among the children in the parish and continue to build the Kingdom of God in a fun and creative way. After all, faith is all about relationships and for us Christians the most meaningful relationship is with Jesus. We teach the children about Jesus as they experience friendship and develop a sense of belonging with their peers, their catechists and the wider parish community around them”.

A range of some all times classic movies from Walt Disney will follow in the next few weeks and more fun is expected at St Columba’s: roll on summer!
