Music at IHM
Every Sunday before the 11 o’clock Mass a group of musicians congregate at about 10.15
to run through the music for the day. We have a pool of about 25 musicians, of whom about
15 may be able to attend on any given Sunday.
We have all four vocal parts, flutes, clarinets, trumpets and guitars and, underpinning
it all, our organist Geoff Little, who has given of his talents for more than 40 years.
The choice of music is eclectic, the distinction between "traditional" and "folk" masses
abandoned many years ago. Music from the Saint Louis Jesuits, the Thomas More Group and
Taize
all make regular appearances, but Bach, Tchaikovsky, Berlioz and Wesley are also
represented and the occasional taste of Rock ’n’ Roll.
Over the years the group has joined with other churches in ecumenical Taize services and
in the music for the local Christian holiday week for children
"Lighthouse".
Beyond Great Missenden the BBC morning service was broadcast live from IHM in 1994, the
group visited Moscow in 1991 and 5 recordings emerged from the "Cathy era" when Cathy Waters
(nee Andrews) devoted her amazing talent and energy to broadening the musical repertoire and
entwining it with the liturgy to leave a lasting legacy.
The liturgies in Great Missenden can suit all tastes. At
the 6 p.m. mass on Saturday evening, Brian Shelley provides organ
accompaniment for hymns and reflection at the Eucharist.
The parish is blessed with talented and enthusiastic families and many young people join
the group before moving on in due course. The group’s membership is regularly refreshed,
although we always need more and it is delightful when old friends return to join us,
especially at Christmas and Easter.
